Quando cominciano la scuola dell'obbligo, gli scolari hanno cinque anni e dovrebbero aver già imparato le basi orali della lingua di scolarizzazione. Tuttavia, in alcuni distretti, l'80% degli alunni che entrano in 1H parla un'altra lingua a casa e tra il 60 e il 70% non parla o non capisce una parola di francese.
